ANNUAL CONSULTATIONS ON REFUGEE PROGRAM
Each year, the Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) invites
people from across Australia to participate in its annual national consultations
on the future of Australia's refugee and humanitarian program. These consultations
inform RCOA's annual submission to the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship
on issues the Australian Government should consider in planning the coming year's
refugee program.
These consultations cover a wide range of topics - from the
strategic role of Australia's refugee program, to the refugee and humanitarian
visa application process, issues relating to pre-arrival orientation, travel to
Australia, on-arrival settlement services, onshore protection visa issues and
the complex settlement issues faced by refugees and humanitarian migrants.
During October and November 2008, 30 face-to-face consultations
were held in 11 cities across Australia to help inform RCOA's submission on the
2009-10 refugee program. In addition, five teleconferences were held to enable
people in another 19 cities and regional towns to participate.
